Corrosion Under Insulation Assessment

Engineering assessment of corrosion under insulation damage on pressure equipment and piping, including fitness-for-service evaluation, remaining life analysis, and repair or remediation recommendations.

Corrosion under insulation can progress undetected until significant wall loss or through-wall penetration occurs. When CUI damage is identified — through inspection, leak events, or targeted surveys — TES Canada provides engineering assessment to evaluate the severity of the damage, determine whether the affected equipment or piping can remain in service, and recommend appropriate remediation.

CUI assessment typically includes evaluation of metal loss extent and distribution, fitness-for-service analysis in accordance with API 579-1/ASME FFS-1, remaining life calculation based on estimated or measured corrosion rates, and assessment of coating and insulation condition. TES Canada considers the specific damage morphology associated with CUI — which may include broad general thinning, localised pitting, or preferential attack at insulation support points — to ensure the assessment captures the actual condition.

Assessment deliverables include a documented engineering evaluation with clear disposition — continued service, monitored operation, repair, re-insulation, or replacement — along with recommendations for future inspection and CUI management. The assessment integrates with the facility's broader integrity management and RBI programmes to ensure CUI findings inform ongoing risk ranking and inspection planning.
