Damage Mechanism Review

Systematic identification and documentation of active and potential damage mechanisms across process equipment and piping systems, using API 571 and facility-specific operating data to support RBI and integrity planning.

Damage mechanism review is a foundational step in any integrity management or RBI programme. TES Canada performs systematic reviews to identify, document, and assess the damage mechanisms relevant to each equipment item or piping circuit based on materials of construction, process conditions, operating history, and industry experience.

Reviews are conducted using API 571 as the primary reference framework, supplemented by operator-specific knowledge, historical inspection data, and failure records. TES Canada evaluates both established mechanisms — such as high-temperature hydrogen attack, sulphidation, caustic cracking, and erosion — and mechanisms that may not have been considered in earlier assessments, including those arising from process changes, new feedstocks, or updated industry understanding.

Each review produces a documented damage mechanism register that maps applicable mechanisms to specific equipment or circuits, identifies expected damage morphology, and informs inspection method selection and interval determination. The output feeds directly into RBI programme development, fitness-for-service evaluation, and long-term inspection planning.
