Pitting & General Corrosion Assessment

Engineering assessment of pitting and general corrosion damage in pressure equipment and piping, including fitness-for-service evaluation, remaining life calculation, and continued-operation recommendations.

Pitting and general corrosion are among the most common damage mechanisms encountered in operating equipment. While general corrosion produces relatively uniform wall loss, pitting creates localised areas of concentrated metal loss that can reduce structural integrity disproportionately to the volume of material removed. TES Canada assesses both damage types using the methodologies established in API 579-1/ASME FFS-1.

Assessment includes evaluation of measured wall thickness data, characterisation of damage distribution and severity, minimum required thickness verification, and remaining life calculation. For pitting, TES Canada applies the specific assessment procedures that account for pit density, depth, and interaction effects. For general corrosion, assessment focuses on remaining wall thickness relative to design requirements and projected corrosion rates.

The assessment output provides a documented engineering basis for continued operation, establishes monitoring or re-inspection requirements, and identifies equipment approaching end-of-life criteria. Results integrate with the facility's RBI programme to update risk rankings and inspection plans based on actual measured condition rather than assumed corrosion rates.
