Course Overview

This practical course develops competency in reviewing, preparing, and qualifying Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) under ASME Section IX. It covers essential and supplementary essential variables, mechanical test requirements, PWHT and its effect on qualification, impact testing, hardness requirements, and the review of real WPS/PQR documentation for compliance. The course also addresses how ASME B31.3 interacts with Section IX qualification requirements. It is designed for welding engineers, QA professionals, inspection personnel, and engineering staff who are responsible for producing, reviewing, or approving welding procedure documentation.

Who Should Attend

Welding engineers and engineering technologists responsible for WPS and PQR preparation
Quality assurance engineers and QC inspectors reviewing welding procedure documentation
Inspection personnel required to verify WPS/PQR compliance during fabrication
Procurement and contract engineers reviewing supplier welding documentation
Engineers working with ASME-coded pressure equipment and piping systems
Prerequisites

Basic familiarity with welding processes and industrial fabrication. Some exposure to pressure equipment or piping fabrication environments is beneficial.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the structure and purpose of ASME Section IX and its role in pressure equipment fabrication
  • Identify P-Numbers, F-Numbers, A-Numbers, and their function in procedure qualification
  • Distinguish between essential, supplementary essential, and non-essential variables for common processes
  • Review a WPS for completeness and compliance with ASME Section IX requirements
  • Interpret PQR mechanical test requirements — tensile, bend, CVN impact, and hardness
  • Understand how PWHT affects essential variable qualification and supplementary variables
  • Apply ASME B31.3 qualification requirements and identify where they differ from Section IX
  • Identify common errors and non-conformances in WPS and PQR documentation

Course Outline
