Course Overview

This course prepares candidates for CWB Welding Supervisor certification under CSA W47.1, the Canadian standard for certification of companies for fusion welding of steel. It addresses the technical and supervisory knowledge required of a Welding Supervisor responsible for welding quality in CWB-certified fabrication and construction environments. The programme is applicable to structural steel, pressure equipment, and pipeline fabrication sectors where CSA W47.1 certification is mandatory.

Who Should Attend

Welding engineers and technologists seeking CWB Welding Supervisor certification
Production supervisors and foremen responsible for welding operations in CWB-certified companies
Quality assurance personnel overseeing welding quality under CSA W47.1
Fabrication and construction professionals in structural, pressure equipment, and pipeline sectors
Prerequisites

Post-secondary education in engineering, engineering technology, or welding technology, OR significant experience in a welding supervisory role. CSA W47.1 eligibility criteria apply.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the role, responsibilities, and authority of a CWB-certified Welding Supervisor
  • Demonstrate knowledge of welding processes used in structural and pressure equipment fabrication
  • Understand welding metallurgy, HAZ characteristics, and preheat requirements for steel
  • Review and interpret Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR)
  • Apply quality control requirements for welding operations under CSA W47.1
  • Manage welder qualification records and performance monitoring
  • Identify and respond to weld defects through corrective action and documentation
